Operating systems compared
There is a lot of ranting when it comes to GNU/Linux versus OS-X and Windows. What most people agree on considering GNU/Linux: It is about freedom, it takes your privacy very serious (with exceptions to this rule), you are in control, less polished, a bit more rough edges, basic problems may need more expertise, help and expertise is always available online, (like OS-X) a better security model than Windows (which makes it the best solution as a server), take care to choose supported hardware. That is it in short.
Tastes for the desktop
There is an incredible amount of tastes of GNU/Linux. This is all about one taste: Xubuntu. Xubuntu is Ubuntu plus XFCE. This means that it is a branch of popular Ubuntu with a basic light weight desktop environment called XFCE. We have tested lots of GNU/Linux distributions and all of them have strong and weak points. For daily use Xubuntu turns out to be a good choice, it is fast, easy to use, it is basic and yet it looks nice.
Installing and tuning Xubuntu
There is a Dutch page that will be translated to English some time hopefully: Installatie en tuning Ubuntu.
